Nearly 3,000 Visiting Nurses Now Access Patient Records At Point Of Care

“The Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY), the largest not-for-profit home healthcare organization in the U.S., has been providing home healthcare to patients in New York City since 1893...Over the years, VNSNY has worked to become a leader in using technology to improve the efficiency and accuracy of its services, as well as improve communications...The technology worked well. However, over time, the I.T. team began to notice spikes in data traffic…These spikes in data transmission eventually began to cause a slowdown in access to the servers. This, in turn, threatened the productivity improvements that VNSNY had realized... the increased access to information created new challenges for the I.T. team...each new technology tended to add layers of complexity...Another increasing concern for the I.T. team was ensuring data security...The team considered three solutions, and ended up selecting Mobility XE mobile VPN from NetMotion Wireless...The other options required a lot more infrastructure in terms of additional software and hardware. In sum, they would have required too much work and effort to install. ‘Mobility XE was easy to implement, because we built it into the standard image,’ says Randy Cleghorne, VNSNY Director of I.T. / Chief Technology Officer. ‘Every time we order a tablet, they press the image, so it comes already installed. No one here has to do any other configurations of the software.’ The I.T. team has installed Mobility XE on the tablet PCs of its nearly 3,000 clinicians…’The most important benefit is ease of use,’ says Cleghorne. ‘In fact, the clinicians report how easy this is to use.’ In addition, the clinicians' application sessions can now seamlessly roam across different networks without user intervention.” Read the full story here

Wireless Aircards with VPN Help Secure Patient Information

Consider purchasing wireless aircards, protected by virtual private networks, to safely transfer patient information from point-of-care devices back to the agency's main computer. Such aircards, which access the Internet from anywhere a cell phone would work, have provided St. Francis Health Services with an alternative to landlines…That's important as more households are prieschewing traditional landlines, which many systems need to transfer information…No matter what kind of Internet connection you use to sync point-of-care devices - landline, DSL or wireless -virtual vate networks (VPN) offer a solution to securing data transfers from your agency to point-of-care devices, says John Knopf, director of product management for NetMotion Wireless, a Seattle-based software vendor that recently set up a mobile VPN for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York…VPNs provide a secure telecom infrastructure for transmitting patient information from remote offices, such as the patients' homes…Beyond just securing data, NetMotion is a "mobile" VPN, which minimizes interruptions that occur when you lose a wireless signal and improves productivity, Knopf says. More than half of NetMotion's customers say that their mobile VPN increased productivity by 20%.

NetMotion Enables Lossless VoIP, Video Apps Over Enterprise Mobile VPNs

“Packet prioritization and a proxy architecture built into a new version of NetMotion Wireless' mobile virtual private network software promise to ease enterprise efforts to extend VoIP, IP video and other real-time productivity applications to mobile workers…the Mobility XE version 8.0 software platform overcomes packet loss challenges associated with accessing VoIP and video via bandwidth-constrained mobile networks…John Knopf, director of product management for NetMotion Wireless explains that the Mobility XE platform manages mobile data sessions at a proxy server as if the sessions were remote procedure calls, executing them at the proxy server on behalf of client. ‘Even if the mobile device loses contact, the proxy allows the application to think the client is still there.’ The new software also implements packet loss recovery techniques to ensure rapid recovery of data where loss occurs…Mobility XE can maintain call quality even with up to 70 percent packet loss in areas of degraded wireless coverage…The same applies to video streaming, another real-time application that NetMotion says it can support with the same combination of packet prioritization and the use of the proxy gateway to maintain call state and recover lost data.” Go here to read more.

Best Practices in Mobile Data Communication

"ln the case of OCSD (Orange County Sheriff's Department), we found the best option to solve our wireless and connectivity challenges was to install specialized mobile virtual private network (VPN ) software on our officers laptops and our back-end servers. In our case, we chose Mobility XE Mobile VPN software from NetMotion Wireless because its solution is widely used by hundreds of law enforcement and public safety agencies around the country. With this software, if an officer's laptop should lose wireless network connectivity, the mobile VPN server software manages and maintains the applications and connections on the back end, with the client software holding the applications in place on the device until a network connection can be restored. Once restored, the client and server software resume the application sessions."
